Chapter 19

We spent a wonderful hour on that beach. The highlight for me was watching Clara shed her clothes to reveal the pink bikini underneath. I always find it a mystery how a woman can look sexier in a bikini than when naked. Don’t get me wrong – I love feasting my eyes on Clara in the nude. But I can also see her vulnerability and humanity, while those slips of pink material somehow transform that same body into something goddess-like. Watching Clara look over her shoulder as she ran into the sea burned itself into my memory as one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen.

After our swim, we laid next to each other on our towels and allowed the sun to dry us off. We were both wearing sunglasses and I was propped up on my elbows looking at the view. After a few minutes, that young couple in matching cycling shorts came running along the flats in the opposite direction. I watched them run past, then saw that Clara was watching them too.

‘What are you thinking?’ she said.

The words that popped into my head were ‘My, what an age-appropriate couple’. But I didn’t want to share that. The age gap was a sore spot and I didn’t want to spoil things. I asked my brain to come up with something else.

‘You know,’ I said. ‘You still haven’t told me why Suzie brought up Jane Austen before storming off.’

Clara gave a groan and there was a moment of silence. Then I heard a sigh of resignation and she began her story.

‘About a year ago,’ she said, ‘Diya was telling Suzie and me about her cousin’s wedding. The marriage had been arranged by the two sets of parents and when Diya described how obsessed her cousin’s mother was about getting her daughter married off, I said: “My god, she sounds like Mrs Bennett from Pride and Prejudice!” We began talking about the similarities between Indian culture and the England of Jane Austen’s time. You know, parents acting as matchmakers, women being expected to marry young, and so on. And Diya and I were in the middle of this discussion when suddenly Suzie says: “Wow, that’s so fucked up!” ’

Clara turned sideways towards me, leaning on one elbow.

‘Well, that pissed me off,’ she said. ‘I mean, I get that society has changed and that women my age now go to university or pursue a career rather than get married … but that doesn’t mean society in the past was “fucked up”. I just think it was different.’

Clara looked down at my chest.

‘So I said that, and Suzie accused me of being brainwashed by the patriarchy. Well, that really pushed my buttons! So I started to argue that Jane Austen’s time was actually less fucked up than ours. That choosing to have children when our bodies are young and strong is less fucked up than waiting until we’re older and less fertile. That marrying men who are more mature and
